Where forth art thou?: A sad tale of BAD Journalism

A sad tale of BAD Journalism

In response to the article written by reporter Jeremy Au Yong in the Straits Times on Oct 30th 2005 (read the article here), one of my readers Sarah Tan sent an email to the Society for the Physically Disabled (SPD) as well as the Handicaps Welfare Association to clarify whether said reporter quoted them out of context.

Also, based on the comments from "Pinky" who also sent an email to Straits Time, reporter Jeremy Au Yong and the 2 societies, said reporter APPARENTLY knows wendy cheng personally (This was the signal she got from her phone conversation with said reporter).

P.S. Marcus sent an email to the 2 societies as well and received the same feedback (They were quoted out of context by reporter Jeremy Au Yong).

WTH...y wun u just let this rest?

And over a toilet?

Sheesh...

It is common sense that:

1. YES, disabled ppl should be given priority to use these toilets over EVERYONE else

2. BUT if there are not disabled ppl ard at that point of time and your bladder is about to burst, it is PERFECTLY ALRIGHT to use the handicapped loos as long as u keep it clean.

XX did mention in her blog that if there is a handicapped person ard, she will let them use the toilet 1st.

Are u so petty that you simply cannot let this matter rest?

Or perhaps you have SOOOOO much free time on hand that even though it has almost been 3 weeks since XX had posted the extremely politically incorrect entry, (not to mention that she has already moved on from this whole controversy eons ago n am enjoying her shopping in bangkok now), you are still digging out emails and correspondences to prove to the rest of the world that she is wrong.

WE AREADY KNOW THAT SHE IS A ARROGANT & SELFISH BITCH (OR IS SHE?) WHO LUVS TO USE THE HANDICAPPED TOILET. MAYBE SHE VIEWS BEING SHORT AS A HANDICAP.

Now can you move on to another topic?

Harping on this, and dragging down scores of other ppl while doing it, will only show how petty a person you really are.

Working in the media industry yourself, or as you so claim, you should know that selective reporting (be it from a bias or unbias point of view) is done in almost ALL news reports and articles, not only XX's.

Anonymous said...

mr neutral point of view, u must have read xx's post after she edited it. if only someone has a screenshot of the pre-edited version. then u will understand what the whole big fuss is all about.

Anonymous said...

I am not a Mr, I am a Miss

I read her post before it was edited, before this whole hoo-ha came about.

It may have been written in bad taste but as far as I can remember, XX did not mention anywhere in her post that she will blatantly use the handicap loo instead of the normal toilets even if she sees a disabled person ard it, simply becos she luvs it.

Even if she did, ok, so she is wrong. I did mention before that XX is sometimes childish, vulgar and arrogant.

But my point now is, is there a need to harp on it for 3 weeks?

Anonymous said...

Good job there.

I never believe that article was wrriten from a neutral point of view and you have just proven me right.

Perhaps we should bring this to the attention of the media again to better clarify the stand of the 2 societies?

mooiness said...

*MISS* neutral point of view: we are not harping on about it. We are merely pointing an example of bad journalism as the title of this post says. ;)

As the politicians here in Oz like to say, "If no one keeps the bastards honest, then they'll just keep on lying."

It's called "check and balances" and through no fault of us ppl here, the cringingly fawning behaviour of ST and its poor excuse for a "journalist" has managed to turn this beyond just XX now.

Don't blame us messengers, blame the people who wrote the messages in the first place.

from a neutral point of view wrote: "I can remember, XX did not mention anywhere in her post that she will blatantly use the handicap loo instead of the normal toilets even if she sees a disabled person ard it, simply becos she luvs it."

Yes, Wendy did mention that she'll let any disabled person use the toilet before her.

Then she contradicts herself by writing this: "As far as I am concerned, you have a physical disability - and that is where you have a disadvantage. Your bladder is working fine isn't it? So you wait, just like normal people do, when there is a queue for the toilet. The rest of us queue up to use a toilet - I don't see why the disabled should be any different.

Queue up? Didn't she say that disabled toilets are hardly ever utilised? Maybe it's able-bodied people using them, I don't know. =)

Anyway, I agree we should just let the whole toilet issue rest, but sadly, with Jeremy Au Yong's story in the papers, it has now become an issue on journalistic integriy (lovely, isn't it?).

"Selective reporting", as you mentioned (I prefer "biased reporting"), happens and I concur. But the sad fact is that by stating that Wendy has "unlikely supporters" in the form of the two charities, the article has brought bad publicity upon them, and seemingly handed the "moral" victory to Wendy when it should've been objective in the first place.

No one's asking for Au Yong's head--he's entitled to make mistakes, especially if it wasn't intentional. We're just giving our side of the argument.

endorsed by XX? i dun see any of their banners on XX's blog. I onli see an advertorial... and in that short write-up... the word "endorse" did not even appear. she merely advertised it, maybe even on her own accord. afterall she just said they sent her a mail to ask her try out their service. hundreds of other ppl in sg might have recieved this invitation from them. they might not even be aware that the wendy cheng they sent the invitation to is the wendy cheng that all of you here at xlx is aiming.

when will inconsiderate ppl learn to stop causing hurt to businesses as and when their childish minds tell them to. If you hate XX becoz u think her words are malicious... let me tell you... U ARE NO BETTER OFF~!! cutting businesses off like that. have anyone ever given a thought about how all the employees, down to the cleaner aunties and uncles will suffer if the company u boycott is losing thier business. if u don't like a person, go for the person. Dun go around gunning everyone u think that person is close to down... coz if you do... u're no different from a loanshark...

Well said.

A mature and sensible person will always target the problem, not the person.

In this case, the prob is XX, not the companies who are endorsing her. By boycotting the companies, u r causing unnecessary distress to their employees who are totally innocent.

If so, you are even more selfish and malicious than XX.

anonymous at Sat Nov 05, 06:58:21 PM 2005: although I did not write directly to ST, I wrote to SPH Singapore and by their own initiative they wrote to ST to clarify their position and to state to them that the society was quoted out of context.

I feel that that is a good indirect result.

By stating that I'm a "Malaysian living in Perth" I get the feeling that you are implying that I have neither the right nor the need to care about what's happening in Singapore.

If that's your feeling it's ok by me. There are Singaporeans living in Singapore that feel strongly about this issue too.

Once again this whole Malaysia vs. Singapore thing is getting tiring. If Kenny Sia said something inflammatory and Singaporeans blast him for it, I'd applaud them. Blindly clinging on to this nationalistic thing is illogical.

My response:

By mentioning about you being a non local, was made with curiousity in mind and nothing else, AND CERTAINLY NOT about what you have in mind, the silly "Malaysian vs Singapore" thing.

I agree there are Singaporeans who feel strongly about this particular issue, as you mentioned, but I believe there are even more who already shrugged it off and moved on with their lives, there being much more important livelihood issues to be concerned with.

Whether one has the right or the need to care about his neighbours' affairs, is so controversial today that war can erupt!! My very simplistic view is that one can care about anything in this world, but one may not necessarily have the right to interfere. If you care about issues like 'climate change' or 'air pollution' or 'internation security' etc, I will be the first to applaud you, and you may even have the right to take drastic actions because you're a citizen of this planet.

About "Kenny Sia", I don't know him nor do I know what "inflamatory statements" you are talking about? But, of course, IF he/she says something that injures the integrity of local citizens, then I'm sure there will be local people who are patriotic enough to stand up and object reasonably to what is said, without having to resort to invade his/her privacy. I just don't believe in personal attacks.

Thank you =)

to the anonymous who quoted mooiness, by applying your "simplistic view", i guess you have no right to interfere with mooiness's interference either. your view is largely and generally flawed, in this context anyway. mooiness was just trying to get the general concensus out of the way.

i know i'm biased against xx but i don't blog about it i don't even have a blog but some things, you know people don't like to hear so just keep your farking mouth shut. (ya ya den next thing you guys will just quote me and say, they don't like to hear me talk cock right? so i should keep my farking mouth shut also... but fark you i don't have 60 thousand people reading my comments lor)

To 'Carlos' who said

"by applying your "simplistic view", i guess you have no right to interfere with mooiness's interference either. your view is largely and generally flawed, in this context anyway. mooiness was just trying to get the general concensus out of the way."

My response:

For your info, my first innoncent comment to "mooiness" on this topic of "BAD Journalism" was to ask him politely if he would you like to take the lead to cleanse this (in his words) "cringingly fawning behaviour of ST.." for us ? since I observed that no S'porean was about ready to do so ! That was so much respect I have for him.

As from his and my subsequent responses, you can read that I agreed with most of his statements with some qualifications though, and I addressed his "feeling" that I implied he had "neither the right nor the need to care about what's happening in Singapore" in a general context. You can read the comments above. No one is accusing him of anything and the word 'right' has become so controversial that I myself said my view is simplistic.

I am sure "mooiness" can make his own comment, but since you are talking for him and perhaps feeling that my view is too simplistic and (in your words) " largely and generally flawed, in this context anyway", I would appreciate to hear your detailed discourse on "the right and the need to care about what's happening in a neighbouring country"

1. Business should be careful who they ask to endorse their products. If they wish to avoid boycott from consumers, they should not have chosen a bad role model in the first place. It's their responsibility. It is businesses like these that keep XX going.

2. Almost all industries would have uncle & aunties working there, be it charity organizations, or illegal business, such as gambling or brothels. So???

3. Loanshark?? How does that even come into the picture. Why don't u compare that to terrorists.. Duh

It is business like these that provide sponsorships/free gifts (vouchers) etc.. that keep XX going and spur her to continue writing nonsense.

Why do u think countries like Iran, North Korea, Cuba etc.. suffer economic sanctions by UN? It is because those countries leaders put their own ppl at risk.

On the same note, if the business do not want to be targeted, they should make better marketing decisions. It is the business owners themselves who put their own business & employees at risk with their poor marketing decisions to support bad role models.

By the way, it is time to change ur nick because ur views so far have been far from neutral.

Okay, let's think this through. You're posting about an issue that relates to accessibility, and you choose to post e-mails as images which screen readers cannot interpret? Are you fucking stoned?

mooiness said...

to the anonymous that I was responding to: sorry if I mistook your point of view.

I didn't know that I would come across as having so much influence when I'm only one person. I thank you for the flattery. :)

That said, please don't forget that there are a lot of your fellow Singaporeans who probably did send emails and the like but chose not to publicise their stance. This is understandable considering that those who chose the opposite caught so much flak for it.

As to your request that I take the lead, I want to point out that ppl like Xialanxue and Sandrapowderpuff are already showing the way very clearly. However if you feel strongly about something, you don't need to follow any lead.

I read now that ST has posted a follow-up article about it so that proves that grassroots efforts can achieve something.

Anonymous said...

Something I don't understand..

why can't ppl send emails to the concerns to voice out their opinions politely? Any wrong with doing that?

Anonymous said...

or must they do it on their blogs to gain your approval?

Anonymous said...

don't you guys think it is really sad that she has to ask her friend to moderate her comments when she is out of the country for a few days? Really gives an idea as to how frequently she moderates the comments and how uptight she is about negative comments

to "mooiness" who said:

"to the anonymous that I was responding to: sorry if I mistook your point of view"
*********

I appreciate that, at least, you (Marcus as I just learn) have some courage to say the difficult word "sorry" and can agree to disagree without resorting to personal abuse.

You can see there're far too many who read more than what is written; use profanities to show disagreement; calling another view "flawed" and yet can't back up with a "correct" view; etc. etc.

If such being the case, sad days are ahead for us all !! An enemy doesn't need to attack a country, but just make sure its people are brainless !! Or at the very least, when "karma" comes, many of its people will be "handicapped".

Marcus, maybe you're right living where you're.

see if you can post this for me, just something to reply to E@L..expat @ large....ok? its just that now that there is an auzzie on tril for drugs he is soooo worried...didn't hear from him when anybody else got caught...this is my post to him:would it have something to do with the auzzie on trial??
i didn't anything from you about all the malaysians, chinese and others getting hung??? wonder why?
they don't hang anybody as deterant...only because they frown on druggies, only trying to keep them in their place..OUT OF SINGAPORE!....keep in mind the old saying that " if u can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen". Tatler left as did the Chef and a few others....I dun miss them!

1) st prints what most readers want - the controversy.

so, even if the view of the 2 societies are important, they may be a conscious afterthought.

i'd skip them - boring - even if they're in the middle of the story, thus missing the juice of this sad journalism hooha.

2) looks like a case of poor writing - and lack of space - that could have borne out the context of the societies' replies. the reporter had quotes that weren't used, thus bearing out point 1.

3) finally, give this a rest. that whats-her-name doesn't deserve more publicity.

4) pls delete rumtum-fugger's post so that we don't have to scroll so far down. the bugger could have dozed off on the keyboard typing his comment.

"Alrighty, you losers can all stay here in boring Singapore - I'm off!"

its only BKK and she called us losers as we had work instead of staying at home all day.

i travelled to more and further countries compared to her this year!

damn and i make a comment (as per above) in her page and need her to moderate, i doubt she would approve it.

Stupid idiot...

stop being such a loser ructum or whatever your name is.

On another note, XX really goes all out for her blog. It's totally sad when your life revolves around a blog. Flouting rules to take photos at zouk and at the thai girl show just to "show her readers". LOSER

chartao said...

eh, why my comment delete?

nevertheless my comment on her site was approved.

xialanxue said...

hi leonard your comment was not deleted.. use clt f to find your name.
Maybe you didnt manage to see it because of the . . .s

chartao said...

xialanxue,

oops, found my previous comment, thanks for the tip!

apologise for the misunderstanding. *cheers*

What's wrong with Mr Brown, always deliberately putting Faith into dangerous situations with water just so he can have blogging material?

Anonymous said...

Starting from the top of the "post a comment" page, scroll down until you find ructum's post and click his name to hide his post. The "collapse comments" link at the top of the page is also useful.

What's this thing about Jean Marie and the New Paper? XX's all worked up over her story and have kinda hit out at Edwin Teo? And can someone remove rumtum's comment?

Hi, for what's it worth, I think the entire episode is overblown.

I don't necessarily agree with the language XX uses in the blog entry in question, but her central message was clear: toilets for the disabled should be available if the disabled aren't using it.

The point to all this is a bit of commonsense. This isn't one of those black-or-white situations where the toilets have been specifically legislated by law to be used only by the disabled. The graciousness of our society is measured by how we let the disabled have a priority in using these toilets and also how we respond to bloggers such as XX.

I think XX has every right to say what she wishes, and people do have the similar right to criticise her. But I do think a certain line is crossed when people start lambasting her personally. Attack her views not her person; separate the person from the problem is one of those mantras that come to mind.

Nobody's perfect. XX embodies virtues which are solely lacking in the Singaporean youth today: entrepreneurship, confidence and expressiveness. These are traits that can be appreciated. How many of us can claim to build a blogsite from scratch that attracts 20,000 visitors a day? I can't, and neither can the owner of this blog.

Point by point, blog by blog, comparisons will yield discrepancies, differences and at times, deep-rooted resentment. The point is really to move on. There is no support for XX or support for the anti-XX people. The only support we need is support for a principled, well-mannered way to end this.

I think XX has matured and she has learnt. She has moved on from this but are we depriving her the chance to correct herself by dwelling on this matter endlessly? Does not society say that people should be given a second chance?

I say, give her that chance. Let's move on.

I almost fell off my chair reading this, but thanks anyways. I needed the laugh. ;)

Did you just come from another planet?

To anonymous who said

Agree, we should learn more from XX. knnbccb, you fucking right. *roll eyes*

Remember the yellow ribbon entry she blogged? How did she comment on those ex-convicts? How? Did she say they didn't deserve a 2nd chance and if they know is wrong in the first place, don't do it. And she wow she sound so "self-righteous"

it is so laughable that whatever she hates about someone or some things can be found right on herself but she just don't realised that. Most choose to keep quiet when they knew they are in the wrong but that xx will make a hill out of a mole and still insist she is right like a spoilt brat.

Fugger she is

She has not matured nor learnt a single bit.

Serious? I see many many who behave and think like her but the only diff is they are still in primary and without a blog which she does.

Can i have the link to that?? Or maybe put up a screen shot, i don't want to visit her blog if possible. Thanks!

I know she moderates her tagboard with an iron fist, and in order to show that she doesn't, she allows some of the lamer slams of her to pass through, eg xx has a big vagina. But she censors those which hit right at her raw nerve, those that hit the nail on the head.

I read her latest one where she went on about her purportedly high IQ score, which she claims was proof was her "high intellect". It was mind-blowingly hilarious, because it reminded me exactly of someone i once came across, albeit on an online basis only.

This was what i posted in her blog, which i'm almost 100% certain will be censored by her.

"Hey xia xue, amazingly, what you most recently posted reminded me of a character i knew in internet relay chat.

A born loser with only PSLE education, who lives an existence unworthy of a human being selling shit online. I think he earns like a few hundred dollars a month too, like you.

Anyway he also loved to tell people that he has a very high IQ and even said that he belonged to MENSA!! It was such a joke cos he was exposed later on!!!! Well at least we knew he lied and boasted so to his grotesque and obese girlfriend, one of the many hideous and retarded shits he hooked from IRC so he could get laid, even if it's by a pig.

I know you moderate your posts and i dare you to post mine =P ;)"

Ahh sorry typo

meant to say :which she claims was proof of her "high intellect".
