Where forth art thou?: Beauty and the societal pressure

Beauty and the societal pressure

What is your definition of beauty?

There could be 6 billion different answers to this question but one thing is clear - Our definition of beauty is shaped by the culture we live in and the answers from people living in the same culture will most likely differ only in terms of phrasing or as a result of different degrees of exposure to the media, knowledge gap, affluence and subcultures.

Now let's look at Singapore. What do we think of whenever someone mentions beauty? We will MOST LIKELY think of a woman with a slim figure, supple breasts, a fair complexion and long hair. This is the result of constant exposure to competing advertisements on slimming, breast enhancement, skin-whitening (not to mention the various makeup ads) and hair-strengthening/split-ends fixing shampoo/rebonding that all promise to "bring out the beauty in you". But all these advertisements alone cannot be held fully responsible for instilling our current idea of beauty. Instead look towards television content - reality tv shows like "The biggest loser", chinese weight-losing programs sponsored by slimming agencies, ethnicity of MTV hosts, casting of characters for local dramas and stereotypes. Couple that with word of mouth and peer pressure and you have a complex interplay of the various factors that reinforces each other and our notion of "beauty".

There has been a rising trend in the media over the past couple of years to cast and star and promote eurasians and with that, the emergence of coloured contacts, hair dyes and what not. This has also worked to shape and redefine our beliefs about beauty. The question we have to ask ourselves is this: "Why can't we be comfortable with our own unique heritage?".

Beauty transcends race, language and religion but most importantly beauty comes from within (cliche as it may sound, it is true). Let's look deeper - What is the underlying reason for us to "pursue" beauty?

I believe it is happiness that we all ultimately seek.

The desire for happiness is what drives us to want to look "beautiful". We have the misconception that if only we were just a little slimmer, if our teeth were just a little straighter, if our complexion were just a little better etc., people will like us more and we would be happier. What many fail to understand is that with this kind of "beauty" comes its own unique set of problems - Stalkers, Jealousy, Guys who just want to get you into bed - and you tend to attract the wrong company. The constant strive for "beauty" and perfection puts undue stress on many and adds to their unhappiness instead (ironic because they are in fact looking for happiness).

I have many friends around me who are like that (unhappy happiness-seekers). I am sure you have them too - Jane who complains that she is fat when in reality she is not, Irene who wants teeth like those of movie stars so that she can have the perfect smile and look good in neoprints. So, I just have this to say to the girls out there - If you want to be happy, you have to accept yourself for who you are. Don't think that "being beautiful" will make you happy. If a guy is being shallow, dump him. He's not worth it. Ultimately, one will come along and love you for who you are, not for how you look and that's THE ONE you are looking for no? Above all, the most important thing is to be true to yourself and be true to others.

We all have the capacity to be beautiful inside.

P.S. In media and communications theory, there are such things as preferred/dominant reading, negotiated reading and oppositional decoding. In layman's terms, 1) the author's intended meaning, 2) a personally adopted meaning by the reader that differs from 1), and 3) meaning that is in direct opposition to 1). Oppositional decoding is usually brought about by selective perception (You only see/think what you want to see/think).

In earlier posts, there were a lot of instances whereby the readers showed through their comments that they have taken to negotiated reading and oppositional decoding (by twisting the intended meaning of the entries) perhaps due to the misunderstanding of the objectives of this site. I hope that people can just take in what they read with an open mind. Just to TRY to pre-empt any oppositional decoding, the intent of this piece is just to inspire - simple as that and there is no hidden meaning. Don't read too much into it.

Did you even read the entry???

Aren't you yourself guilty of negotiated reading and oppositional decoding when you read XX's latest post about Dawn not being a blogger? Instead of reading her post objectively, you chose to impose your post feelings and immediately labelled XX as "jealous" and plastered her picture in front of a Star Wars poster for all to see on this site.

Here's what I suggest: if you want to stop people from misinterpreting your views, I suggest you yourself start having some objectivity. The purpose of this site started out to be objective but the constant XX bashing with little or no reason has skewed the site towards a little more than a bashing site.

That is why people are starting to read things into your Dawn postings. True, taken from a step back, you may not have intended any of the comments coming from here, intending only an objective discussion. But your objectivity has been severely hampered by your posts about XX and that is coming back to hit you hard.

Everything you post now on will be subject to negotiated reading and oppositional decoding and that is because, in a large part, you started it first.

slam kenny sia while ur at it.

Anonymous said...

yes i did. it's just plain hypocritical of you. anonymous at 11:31am I share your sentiments. and hell, it's really not about beauty. it's about your obsession with flaming.

Anonymous said...

See this: "Meanwhile ignore the sour grapes from Asia's most hated blogger who thinks that you are "not a real blogger" but "a pretty girl who just happens to have a blog" (So wendy, what's a REAL blogger? - A 1.4m, 50kg hypocritical bitch? Then I guess there will only be one REAL blogger around)."

Now, if you read her entry properly, you would have realised that she was talking about herself being a "professional" blogger (or just a more frequent blogger) than Dawn, who is more of a casual blogger. In fact, several comments she made were self-deprecating and showed that she did in fact genuinely admire Dawn for what she did (as in the media endorsement). Statements like "Dawn became famous not because of a blog" do not transmit messages of jealousy.

Now, taking your definition of negotiated reading and oppositional decoding, haven't you yourself "personally adopted [a] meaning... that differs from the author?" The most important thing is that you haven't justified your conclusion; if your conclusion was properly reasoned, your objectivity would not have been lost.

I don't know much about journalism, but I do know this: when the newsman starts compromising his/her objectivity, the newspaper will start to become a farce. And that is what is happening to your little site, I think.

Anonymous said...

I guess the good thing to come out of this for you is that this site will be getting lots of hits. But for what reason? If you genuinely started this site as the "finder of truth" and for "objective journalism", then sad to say, your hits aren't a direct result of your aims. But I suppose if the newspaper sells, it's cool, isn't it?

Guys, if you DO notice, I am writing on a blog now, not a newspaper. It's a different medium and I AM allowed to include my feelings and opinions and when feelings and opinions are involved, there WILL be subjectivity.

If you noticed, in a real NEWSPAPER report, everything will be from a Third person perspective. On a blog, it's a First person perspective. There's a huge difference writing in a blog and in a newspaper and I KNOW THAT.

A journalist who blogs need not be writing newspaper reports in his/her blog. This is an avenue where I share my thoughts - I already made it clear - I share my views but you guys are the ones who have your own views and your views are most likely going to differ from mine.

The thing is that some are taking the views of others on this site (anyone who comments) as my views. Please get this clear - Those are other people's views. Don't mix them up. My views are different from those who choose to take on negotiated reading and oppositional decoding and that is the point I am making. Simple as that.

Followed a link from agagooga's blog, you can find a few new pics of Dawn's before photos that aren't here

http://www.friendster.com/useropen.php?uid=23325582

she did something to her eyes. Look at how she smiles at the before and after photos.. especially the one with the guy in black sleeveless T.

So this is nothing more than a thrashy tabloidish blog then? HURRAY!

Anonymous said...

fact is, she did get into a catfight in secondary school. fact is, she did try to steal someone's boyfriend. fact is, she did have plastic surgery along with a few of her other friends.

all these obvious truths are known amongst the social circle that she hung out in those secondary/JC years.

i say this not out of jealousy, or hate or any form of resentment - i say this merely because i know it to be so.

now they're going to make her a star, put her on tv and dress her up in a mtv. but honestly, since when was tv about reality anyway?

just let it go.
after all she's fit for the part, innit?

Heh, not forgetting to mention the dimensions of a "perfect" woman: the 36" 24" s6". Most male friends I know cannot understand women's standards of beauty (that is to say, those that we conjure up ourselves. I think that both genders have different ideas of what looks good. Most men do not find dawn attractive as opposed to the number of women who do.) That, and the societal standard of beauty differs from generation to generation. Good post.

Anonymous said...

From a girl's point of view on beauty.. Personally, I don't find Dawn as a "knockout" as most of you claimed.

She is no doubt pretty like a doll but there she lacks a certain air of charisma that makes her stand out of the crowd. She needs external packaging like certain types of clothings, certain types of make up.. etc to bring out her beauty. She stands out when she is alone but place her next to Vivian Hsu, Maggie Q and maybe Fiona Xie.. you'll only see a "clone" of beauties but none of them stand out sharply.

I prefer charismatic beauties who are able to attract attention nd admiration without "over-packaged" herself. You know those girls whom you can't take your eyes off her even when she is wearing a plain T-shirt, a plain pair of jeans, a clean face and without those if-you-can't-see-you-are-blind accessories.. They may not have very sharp features but they stand out due to being at ease with themselves and the quiet confidence they exude! Such beauties are hard to come by but these are the real beauties(to me at least).

In case any Dawn's fans get defensive and sensitive, I've to clarify that this is my personal opinion on my definition of beauty. Not targeting towards Dawn nor her plastic surgeries.

If one day she gets older and things fall off liao.... very scary right? She is now 21 with this look is very sweet but when she is 28 leh? Still look like that very funny leh.. and also dunno how the rest of her face going to aged also....

true loh, hope don't fall off or go out of shape can liao..

xlx, if you don't want us to think this blog is very much like a tabloid, simple. stop telling us you know just "because you are in the media industry". simple as that.

you clearly want us to take your words seriously because you so claim authority, but now you sing a total different tune. first, this is a platform that campaigns for free speech, then it's a vehicle that seeks the truth. so what exactly is this? a blog or a tabloid/news website. what exactly are you? a journalist who just happens to blog? sounds like xiaxue's warped definition of a blogger to me.

Anonymous said...

i can't believe dawn yeo was so fucking ugly before. DISGUSTING.

Anonymous said...

to the anonymous on top of me (okay that doesn't sound very right haha)

First off, I've been following xlx's blog all this while. This is one of the best blog entries I have ever seen.

If there were no freedom of speech then what you'd see here in the comments section here would be what u would see in xx's site and your comment would not even have seen the light of day! Don't believe me try posting a remark slamming xx on her site then say. So I don't see any problems with freedom of speech. xlx kept her/his words.

And xlx also provides us with things outside the newspaper and has shown us that news in the papers these days shouldn't be taken to be as it is. Well as least ME la if u r not happy if I use "us".

And finally just as TNP wrote yesterday about the teacher who blogs. I think what xlx is trying to tell us is that her/his job is that of a journalist and this is his/her blog. So xlx is both a journalist and a blogger.

Contrast this to xx's definition: Pretty Girl who blogs is not a blogger (Pretty girl is not a job leh! and pretty girl who blogs not blogger meh?)

Anonymous said...

Ain't it simple? xlx is a blogger cum journalist who advocates the freedom of speech in her quest for the truth. There, all summed up in single sentence. Happy?

Guys, if you DO notice, I am writing on a blog now, not a newspaper. It's a different medium and I AM allowed to include my feelings and opinions and when feelings and opinions are involved, there WILL be subjectivity.

*

Yup, I agree - so why is it that people like XX can't be allowed to have their views in peace? If the purpose of your blog was to present your views on current affairs, such as the Dawn Yang "saga", then that's cool. But I think a line is crossed when you start calling XX a "bitch" and whatever else abuse you are hurling at her.

*

If you noticed, in a real NEWSPAPER report, everything will be from a Third person perspective. On a blog, it's a First person perspective. There's a huge difference writing in a blog and in a newspaper and I KNOW THAT.

*

The difference is that your blog presents itself (at first) as a third person perspective-styled newspaper. It seeks to find the truth, it claims, placing reliance on objective evidence, such as the numerous emails you included with your posts. Lately, of course, your position has changed - now it's just a blog in which you're free to express your own opinion.

Cool, I respect that.

*

A journalist who blogs need not be writing newspaper reports in his/her blog. This is an avenue where I share my thoughts - I already made it clear - I share my views but you guys are the ones who have your own views and your views are most likely going to differ from mine.

*

Again, true. But ask yourself what you were doing with Dawn's entries. You weren't expressing a view - you were providing a platform for others to insult her with whatever unmoderated words they could muster. It's not an issue anymore whether this is a blog or newspaper - the true question is whether you should be allowed to do that. The jury is still out on the question and the best thing you could have done was to have held your take on the matter. True, you did not intend any of the comments of your readers but if you allow them to post, incited by your pictures (which convey an unsaid message), you are just as responsible.

*

The thing is that some are taking the views of others on this site (anyone who comments) as my views. Please get this clear - Those are other people's views. Don't mix them up. My views are different from those who choose to take on negotiated reading and oppositional decoding and that is the point I am making. Simple as that.

*

Wah. You make it so cheem ah, this negotiated reading and whatever decoding. Linguistic lingo aside, the plain fact is that everyone does that. You do that, we do that, everyone does that. However, you as the owner of the website, is the sole person who can moderate its effect. It doesn't help very much for you to put up a picture and ask "what's wrong with this picture" and allow readers to flood the site with comments.

Technically, yes, you did not expressly express any opinion but implicitly, what is the effect of your post?

I think ironically, just as the XX you so heartily condemned, you are now coming to grasp with the power of a wide readership. Will you follow in your interpretation of XX's footsteps and allow ridiculous comments to appear on this site (and hence play a secondary role in whatever is said here) or will you take the responsible way out?

Freedom of speech is not unrestricted. It must be balanced with the interests of other parties. Ask yourself this: what were the objectives of this site? How have they changed? Why did they change?

Summary:

First, blog to seek the truth behind XX's actions. Seeks to promote "objective journalism".

Second, blog started to flame XX.

Third. blog started to "investigate" Dawn Yang by posting pics.

Fourth. blog had disclaimer saying comments on site not that of owner's.

Fifth, long post on beauty (which is good) with the accusation that people are misreading comments.

Sixth, assertion that this blog is now a subjective one and that author is expressing own opinion all along.

Cool.

to the guy with the lengthy post ( Mon Nov 14, 09:48:36 PM 2005):

if you follow what you preach, mr. xlx have every right to write whatever thing he wants to.

he just have to bear in mind that he is responsible for every little thing he says. Who are we to judge him in his blog? even if he continues to insult, diss or make fun of someoneelse in his next post, I doubt anyone here (esp you) can stop it.

I bet he aint gonna clear your post either, because since he allow all to comment, he is open to all views by people, which includes yours, but that doesn't mean he have to agree with it.

To Mr. XLX:

Dawn has been busy clearing away all the quiries of P.S on her blog (I know because I, like the rest of the population who obviously have nothing better to do with our time happen to be visiting her site when those queries are around and viola, 10 minutes later, they are gone, and I don't think its Ms Melissa Lam doing the deleting :D )

In view of that, I think its highly unlikely that you'll be getting any response to your letter. (send it to newpaper? straits times? drop the case altogether? its up to you)

But I would still like to thank you for all the entertainment. The New Paper doesn't even come close heh.

There is nothing cheem or gem-like about the post, its chock-full of sweeping statements and I'm-Shooting-My-Mouth-Off-Because-I-Have-Some-LameAss-CommTheory-Knowledge.

Blaming the media is the most superficial, textbook cop-out to beauty and societal pressure; and I'll be damned if I haven't read paraphrased versions of that post in every Communications textbook.

And about the Truth About Dawn Crusade the author of the blog has undertaken:

Why is everybody's panties in a twist over whether or not she lied? Or that she should fess up? Is this Singapore's First Lie?
Let's take a step back from peering at tiny surgical scars and see the big picture-- the surgery worked wonders and it's One Less Ugly Chick to look at. Everyone should rejoice.

Anonymous said...

well written piece, bud. couldn't agree more...

Anonymous said...

Seriously, I'm not against anyone who opts for plastic surgery to enhance their features but Dawn's not an enhancement but a reconstruction. A clone of others.. that is a bit extreme isn't it?

True, she can do whatever she wants on her face but why can't she have the courage to admit it?

True, she has the right not to admit it but why she deny she did?
That's deceiving, isn't it?

I feel it is not about the right and wrong of plastic surgery but WHY she wants to reconstruct her look and drop her heritage that is the main issue. Isn't it a big psychological problem she is having?

I find it so freaking scary. Yikes...

Can you tolerate your friend lying to you?

She is lying to a huge media and that speaks of her integrity. She did had surgeries, but how can she sound and appear as if she is the victim of all these wrongful accusation and others are jealous of her beauty? How much it speaks of her character?

So what if she becomes more pretty physically? She is so ugly and morbid within.

But since you seem to be having such a cosmic wedgie over her false statement, I must assume you are her very close friend. Who is also blind, and did not notice her makeover.

However, if I were you, and if I were Suuuuch bosom buddies with Dawn as to be hurt by her choices, I would assume she has reasons for lying to me.

The general public has no business making judgments on her character or integrity. After all, what has it got to do with you? Why take it so personally? Is it so life-changing that you've "UNCOVERED" this fakery?

You say she's "ugly and morbid" within, well, at least HER GRAMMAR ISN'T AS ATROCIOUS!

She was "cover the face and bomb the base" as mentioned by someone who is supposedly her ex-classmate.

My point being, You guys insult her till the state where she had to go for surgery, if any, to enhance or beautify herself so that she would no longer be ridiculed by arseholes like you guys.

And after insulting her in such manners till she had to do something to overcome such insult dealt out from people, now you guys insult her for going for trying to beautify herself and have a new image or look.

You guys seem to dictate her life a little too much beyond what you should.

Before: She is ugly.. cover the face bomb the base...

After: Omfg she went surgery, she is so fake blah blah.

Really. Either way, someone is always objecting to something.

Quit behaving like saints :)

Superficial morons.

Btw, this post is the biggest cliche ever. I've seen basically the same thing in so many different places. Try harder if you want to "inspire", man.

which are you on about anyway? trying to seek attention and get people to your site?

society may be predictable and cliche, not this blog/article.

and where did u read about xlx wanting to inspire? now go stand in the corner and assume some more.

If you have that many people condemning you for your looks or rather, doing plastic surgery that has harmed no one but yet people behave like as though you have done them great wrong, wouldn't you be pissed off?

I know I would.

And when you say she lies, please back up those words with proof. The lies have now become something which everyone says it is about herself and this whole thing started with her plastic surgery. It is made to look as though, now everything is a lie.

I strongly suggest that in the event something does happen, these people have actual proof.

She can sue anyone for defamation.

Except, this time we will have irresponsible people being put through a civil case.

HAHA to do that, she has to present proof and evidence that she didn't had cuts, can she? LOL!

To Kristy: what? You call this post literature?? I gave it all the rebuttal it deserves, and that means just 3 lines. And no, I do not pretend to be a great writer, unlike xlx who "inspires" through his posts, hohoho.

To anonymous 11:15

If you think this post is not cliche, then you obviously do not read a lot. But that's understandable, I personally have come across content like this countless times, in all its permutations, across all media. *yawn*
But I'll forgive you for not reading a lot. Afterall, our brains have different capacities ;)

Now this so tragically ironic I don't know what to say! Lol! I'll just point you to the 2nd last line of your fav author's post...haha hilarious! But I forgive you, seeing as how you do not read a lot, you are probably lacking in comprehension skills as well.
