My answer to you was; coz it is the most faster and 'so called' safest way to stop a car at the speed.
My qns to you, Will you willing to knock onto a tree or knock onto someone else or knock onto a building?
And i believe that the driver would rather kill himself than killing the passengers at that point. (He probably did think of the safety of the passengers), if not, he wouldn't knock straight onto the tree.
